Description: Mary Ann Evans (1819-1880) wrote under the pen name George Eliot because was worried she wouldn\'t be taken seriously if readers thought she was a woman.
Scandalously at the time, she lived with married man George Henry Lewes (18171878) who wasn\'t able to obtain a divorce from his wife.
They lived here for just 18 months from February 1859 (when her first novel Adam Bede was published) to September 1860. Her anonymity was assured until its great success and she revealed herself as the author in June while living here. She then began to write one of her great works The Mill on the Floss here.
She later wrote one of the great novels of the 19th century Middlemarch.
