Hydra & Kali
Damien Hirsts Hydra and Kali.
Location: Olympian Way, Greenwich Peninsula
Description: This was the first of Damien Hirsts sculptures to be installed on the Greenwich Peninsula from his Treasures from the Wreck of the Unbelievable exhibition in Venice in 2017. It's called Hydra & Kali and sits out on a small pier over The Thames.
It's a 17-foot-high sculpture of the Hindu goddess fighting a huge, many-headed serpent Hirst said of it at the time The snakes are based on a depiction of Hydra in a painting by Gustave Moreau. Kali is a bit mixed up; some parts come from the old Jason and the Argonauts movie, even though Kali is Hindu. Theres also some similarities with the Greek Hecate.
Damien Hirst used to live nearby on the Greenwich Peninsula in the 1980s.
