The home of famous painter of sea-pieces Charles Brooking

Location: Tokenhouse Yard, Bank

Description: The prodigious Greenwich-born marine painter Charles Brooking (1723-1759) lived on a house close to here. The details of how long he lived here are lost but it's likely it was towards his latter years.

His father worked at Greenwich as a decorator and also produced a critical map of Dublin while at Trinity College there.

As a young man he worked for an art dealer and must have tried his hand because by 1752 he was commissioned by the Foundling Hospital to paint A Flagship Before the Wind Under Easy Sail. In 1754 he was elected as a Governor and Guardian of the institution - where you can see if today (see link below).

The National Maritime Museum in Greenwich has 23 of his oil paintings, a complete set of 28 engravings, plus 4 drawings bequeathed by former US President, J.F.Kennedy.

Brooking is said to have died of consumption on the 25th March 1759, reportedly leaving his family destitute. He was buried in the cemetery of St Martin-in-the-Fields.
