Marie Spartali Stillman

The home of pre-raphaelite painter and muse.
Location: The Shrubbery, 2 Lavender Gardens, Battersea
Description: Pre-Raphaelite artist and model Marie Spartali Stillman (18441927) lived here between 186485. Close to Clapham Common this Georgian mansion is now split into many historic sought-after flats.
In 1864, her father Michael Spartali agreed that Marie would begin artistic training with Pre-Raphaelite painter Ford Madox Brown.
She was a professional artist, while also modelling for painters such as Sir Edward Burne-Jones, Dante Gabriel Rossetti and mentor Madox Brown.
Marie so moved the poet Algernon Swinburne that he exclaimed, 'She is so beautiful I feel as if I could sit down and cry'.
Stillman retired in 1898 and settled in Surrey, continuing to paint until her death aged 83 on 6th March 1927.
