The statue of Florence Nightingale after the Crimean War.
Location: Waterloo Place, St James
Description: Florence Nightingale (18201910) was a key figure in the development of modern nursing and healthcare practice. In 1854 she led a team of nurses during the Crimean War from England to Turkey and the Crimea.
On her return to London she founded a major London institution for the training of nurses, and was a pioneer in the use of medical statistics.
Admirers supported her to the tune of 50,000 to fund the Nightingale School and Home for Nurses, established at St Thomass Hospital in 1860.
This is Arthur George Walker's statue of Florence Nightingale depicting her as the Lady with the Lamp, a nicknamed she earned through the reports sent back to England of her nightly inspection rounds in the Crimea. It was commissioned in 1910 to reflect on the Crimean War, but was unveiled five years later on the 24th February 1915.
